Compassionate Conservatism

Rod Dreher tells the story of a family he knows who are going through a hard time financially and recent cutbacks in Texas of funding for CHIPS (Chirldrens Health Insurance) which provides health and dental insurance for kids in certain economic conditions.

I agree that this is a sad sitiuation, but doesn't it just underscore the fact that government shouldn't be doling out charity in the first place? I don't know. What is government for anyway?

When I saw this story(on another blog, I'm new to this one)my first thought was "well if he knows these people, why is he whining about what the government isn't doing? Why isn't he helping himself? There's a great book about how we got into this mess in the first place "Crisis of American Compassion" Sorry, I can't remember the author.
