Fr. Julian Carron, the successor of Don Giussani in leadership of the lay movement Communion and Liberation has been named a member of the Synod of Bishops. There are only 2 members of the synod who are not bishops, Fr. Carron and the Master General of the Jesuits, Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach. Msgr. Echeverria, the prelate of Opus Dei, is of course, a bishop. They were among 33 other personal appointees of Pope Benedict XVI. They are actual participants of the Synod, not just auditors. This means that they are expected to make an intervention, that is, the Charism that they represent has been deemed an essential contributor to this synod. Here is what Fr. Carron has to say on the matter:
Dear friends,
The Holy Father has offered us another demonstration of esteem for our experience by nominating me a member of the Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which will take place in Rome from 2nd-23rd October on the theme of the Eucharist.
To see that Fr. Giussani’s educational method and the history of Christian friendship that started with him are deemed useful for the universal Church’s self-awareness moves us profoundly and gives us great responsibility.
I ask you to pray to Our Lady for the outcome of the Synodal Assembly, and that my awareness, and that of each of us, be ever more dominated by gratitude for the event of Christ present, of whom the Holy Father is the supreme sign, and by the will to spend our whole existence in order that the Church’s life flourish in the world as an embrace of hope for every man.
With my thanks to each one of you,
Fr. Julián Carrón

Hello Stephen, I read Fr Carron's open letter earlier today on the site of CL and I will certainly pray for him as well as the synod. What can you tell us about Fr Carron? I'm relatively ignorant of CL but I'm learning...
Thanks.
