Under Democrats, the NEA tends to fund religious bigotry and post-modern artist angst masquerading as art. You remember Mapplethorpe's homoerotic pornography? Thank the NEA. You remember the Anders Serrano crucifix in a jar of urine? Thank the NEA.
But there's a new sherriff in town! Yup, thanks to W we have an amazing and dedicated poet in charge of the NEA: Dana Gioia
Now the NEA is funding travelling Shakespeare troupes that perform for the rural and inner city poor. He is using the Endowment to establish programs for the arts all around the country that emphasize an education in beauty. I guess if my taxes have to go to the NEA, I'm glad it's going to give inner city kids a taste of the Bard.
Chairman Gioia is truly a brilliant man with some very cool ideas, as you can read in this interview. A man this cool: Is it any wonder he's a faithful Catholic?
You can thank Barbara Nicolosi over at Church of the Masses for the heads up on this one.
