San Antonio's new Archbishop seems like a perfect fit. I have long admired Bishop Gomez, from the days when he served as the President of the Hispanic Priest Association through his time in Denver as the Auxiliary Bishop. His homilies were available on-line and I often spent time listening to his hopeful preaching. He is as faithful as they come. A JP2 kind of bishop, smart, orthodox, and with the personality and heart of a JP2 as well.
I liked Archbishop Flores, he was a holy man, but I am not sure he was very effective at reigning in the heterodox voices in his diocese, nor do I think he had a very effective pastoral plan for evangelization. But he is almost solely responsible for the strong Perpetual Adoration presence in Texas, so I give him props. I think that Archbishop Gomez is the perfect follow up. He has charm, a sense of humor, and a sharp theological mind. Expect great things from San Antonio . . . maybe even a red hat? You never know . . .
We already miss him in Denver.
