Archbishop Levada of San Francisco has been named the new Prefect of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. I know little to nothing about him. I'm sure he's a good choice. But what does his appointment teach us?
1. All the speculators are ridiculously uninformed and should no longer be listend to.
2. Benedict is not a pope who will be easily pigeon-holed.
3. The "more catholic than the pope" crowd wouldn't have been satisfied if they had resurrected Pius XII and placed him as Prefect, so just ignore them and go about the business of the Church.
**UPDATE**
John Allen Jr. has a great "Word from Rome" column on Levada. It's a must read.
